Interim Quality Leadership
Interim QA Managers, Heads of Quality, Quality Directors and remediation leads who can take over a quality organisation on Monday and hold an inspection on Friday.
What an interim quality leader actually does
An interim QA Manager or Head of Quality is brought in when the site cannot wait: a critical inspection finding, a Head of Quality who left without notice, a licence application with a date, an acquisition that needs one quality system instead of two. The brief is rarely "keep things running". It is usually "stabilise, fix, and hand over to a permanent successor in a defined number of months".
That means taking over the release desk on day one, reading the last inspection report and the open CAPA list before the first management meeting, and deciding within the first weeks what the site is actually exposed to. Interim leaders who succeed leave a quality system that a permanent hire can run, and a written handover that says what is still open.
What we look for when we screen
We ask about the last remediation the candidate led: what the authority's finding was, what the response commitments were, and whether the follow-up inspection closed them. We ask how they handled a release decision under commercial pressure, and what they left behind for their successor.
We also test:
- Inspection experience as the responsible person, not as a participant.
- Quality system ownership: management review, quality metrics, CAPA effectiveness.
- QP eligibility where the role requires it, checked before any introduction.
- Speed to judgement: what would you do in the first ten days on this site?
- Working style: can you lead a team that did not choose you, for a fixed period, and hand it over well?
Regulations you will live with
EU GMP Chapters 1 and 2, ICH Q10, Annex 16 where the role carries certification responsibility, and PIC/S guidance on the pharmaceutical quality system. The specific annexes follow the site's product.
Typical employers
Sites after a critical inspection finding, CDMOs during ownership change or rapid growth, start-ups scaling to a first GMP licence, sites covering a long absence of a Head of Quality, and platforms integrating acquisitions across the European Union.
Career path
Interim leaders are usually former QA Managers, Heads of Quality or QPs who have chosen a project-based career. Day rates are in the salary guide. Salary bands and interim day rates are in the salary guide.
Permanent, interim or freelance?
Interim leadership is by definition temporary, on a day rate through a freelance contract or secondment. Some assignments convert to a permanent appointment; we say at the start whether that is realistic, and we run the permanent search in parallel when the site wants it. We place all three and tell you honestly which one your situation needs.
Salary
Indicative salary bands and interim day rates for the most common roles are in the salary guide, with the sources stated.

Frequently asked questions
How quickly can an interim quality leader start?
It depends on who is available and on the notice they carry. We say on the first call whether we have someone realistic for the timing, and we do not send a profile to fill the gap if we do not.
Interim or freelance, which is right for the site?
Freelance contracting suits established independents on shorter assignments. Secondment through Pharma Recruit suits longer assignments and sites that want the employment and contracting obligations on our side. We advise per case, and the terms are agreed in writing before the start.
Can the interim become permanent?
Sometimes, and it is discussed at the start rather than at the end. Many interim leaders prefer to stay project-based; where a conversion is realistic, the terms are in the agreement.
How is an interim leader screened before I see the CV?
A conversation with the founder on the work: the last remediation led, the last inspection hosted as the responsible person, what was handed over. You receive a written note on what was tested and what convinced us.
