MSAT & Process

MSAT Scientists, Process Engineers, Tech Transfer Leads and Process Development Scientists for upstream, downstream, fill/finish and technology transfer.

What an MSAT Scientist actually does

Manufacturing Science and Technology sits between development and the production floor. An MSAT Scientist owns the process once it is in the plant: the tech transfer that brings it in, the process characterisation that defines its control strategy, the investigation when a yield drops or a critical quality attribute drifts, and the continued process verification that proves it is still under control years later.

On a good day that is a design-of-experiments study and a well-argued change control. On a bad day it is a batch on hold at two in the morning and a root cause that has to be found before the next one is filled. Process Engineers carry the same work with more equipment focus; Tech Transfer Leads run the receiving-site programme for a new product.

What we look for when we screen

We ask about the last tech transfer: what was in the gap assessment, which parameters were re-characterised, and what the comparability argument rested on. We ask about the last process deviation the candidate investigated and whether the CAPA held.

We also test:

  • Control strategy thinking: critical process parameters, critical quality attributes, design space.
  • Statistical literacy: DoE, capability, trending under continued process verification.
  • Scale-up and scale-down experience, especially for biologics.
  • Annex 1 impact on aseptic processes where relevant.
  • Working style: can you work with operators at the line and with development scientists in the same week?

Regulations you will live with

ICH Q8 through Q12, EU GMP Chapters 5 and 7, Annex 15 for tech transfer and process validation, Annex 1 for sterile processes, and the ICH Q5 series for biologics.

Typical employers

Biologics CDMOs, vaccine manufacturers, cell and gene therapy facilities, sterile fill/finish sites and API and small-molecule plants across the European Union.

Career path

MSAT Scientists usually come from process development, production engineering or a PhD with an industrial focus. Senior Scientist, MSAT Lead and Head of MSAT follow; tech transfer and process validation leads are the most requested profiles. Salary bands and interim day rates are in the salary guide.

Permanent, interim or freelance?

Permanent MSAT roles suit sites with a product portfolio to maintain. Interim and freelance demand follows tech transfers, new-product introductions and remediation projects with a fixed end date. We place all three and tell you honestly which one your situation needs.

Salary

Indicative salary bands and interim day rates for the most common roles are in the salary guide, with the sources stated.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MSAT and process development?

Process development designs the process before commercial manufacturing; MSAT owns it once it is running in the plant. The skills overlap, and the move from development into MSAT is common.

Do I need a PhD for MSAT?

No. A PhD helps for characterisation-heavy roles in biologics, but hands-on plant experience with tech transfer and investigations is what most sites screen for.

Is MSAT a route into QA or production leadership?

Both happen. MSAT leads move into production management, and MSAT scientists with strong investigation skills move into QA. The process knowledge transfers well in either direction.

How is an MSAT candidate screened before I see the CV?

A technical conversation with the founder on the work: the last tech transfer, the last process investigation, the control strategy they defended. You receive a written note on what was tested and what convinced us.
