The north is the Netherlands' quiet biologics story. Groningen's Zernike and Healthy Ageing campuses host biologics CDMOs with upstream and downstream capacity, biotech spin-outs from one of the strongest pharmacy faculties in Europe, and hospital-based GMP units. The API corridor towards Delfzijl and Emmen adds chemical manufacturing with ICH Q7 quality roles. Demand is strongest for MSAT and process scientists, biologics QA and QC, and validation for capacity expansions.

Employers here recruit nationally and internationally because the local pool is small. That means better relocation packages, faster processes and, for candidates, less competition per role than in Leiden.

Commute and housing

Groningen is two hours from Amsterdam and Utrecht by train, so this is a relocation market, not a commuting one. The upside: housing costs are the lowest of any Dutch pharma cluster, the city is compact and cycling-friendly, and the international community around the university is large.

Language and salary

CDMO and biotech sites run in English; API manufacturing sites are more often Dutch-speaking. Salaries are 5–8 % below the Randstad median but net disposable income is typically higher.
