Leiden Bio Science Park vs Pivot Park vs Amsterdam Science Park: where to work in QA

Candidates ask us this every week, usually phrased as "which one pays best?". Pay is the least interesting difference. Here is the comparison we actually give.

Leiden Bio Science Park

What is there: sterile fill/finish CDMOs, vaccine and biologics manufacturers, ATMP facilities, biotech scale-ups, contract labs. Around 200 organisations and the densest concentration of GMP licences in the country.

QA roles: sterile QA is the speciality, Annex 1, APS, isolators, EM excursions. Also CDMO client-facing QA, ATMP QA at start-ups and QA for clinical supply.

Pay: top of the Dutch range. QA Officers €55–65k medior, €65–78k senior. Freelance rates at the upper end.

Next job: the great advantage. You can move between five employers without moving house. Career progression within the park is fast because everyone knows everyone and sterile QA experience is scarce.

Downside: housing, and the fact that every site is competing for the same people so teams are often stretched.

Pivot Park, Oss

What is there: a large integrated pharma campus (biologics, small molecules, API, fill/finish) plus around 70 companies including CDMOs and analytical services.

QA roles: broader than Leiden, QA for biologics DSP, API, oral solid dose and packaging on one campus. Change control and validation QA are strong here because of continuous capital investment.

Pay: 3–5 % below Leiden gross, but housing is 30–40 % cheaper, so net you are usually better off. Freelance CQV rates match the Randstad.

Next job: fewer employers than Leiden, but the big campus offers internal mobility across product types that a CDMO cannot. Nijmegen and 's-Hertogenbosch add device and packaging QA within 30 minutes.

Downside: more roles require Dutch, and it is a car region.

Amsterdam Science Park and the Amsterdam cluster

What is there: less manufacturing, more of everything around it. MAH quality and regulatory functions, QP for importation, cell and gene therapy start-ups building first facilities, hospital pharmacy GMP units, the EMA.

QA roles: QA for MAH / importer licences, supplier quality and audit, ATMP QA at start-ups, QA for clinical supply. Less batch-record-on-the-floor work; more system and supply chain work.

Pay: RA and MAH QA at the top of the Dutch range, but competing with corporate and consulting salaries. Start-up QA at ATMPs may pay slightly below Leiden but with equity.

Next job: the most English-speaking market and the easiest route into regulatory, supply chain quality or QP-for-importation roles. Harder to return to manufacturing QA after years in MAH quality.

Downside: housing is the worst in the country; commuting from Haarlem or Almere is the usual solution.

Which one for you?

• Want deep sterile manufacturing QA and fast progression: Leiden.
• Want breadth across product types and a lower cost of living: Oss.
• Want regulatory, supply chain or ATMP start-up quality and full English: Amsterdam.
